Every single thought, emotion, or experience we have has a physical sensation that arises with it.

Someone breaks our heart, and our heart space physically aches. Tears are coming, and our throats clench shut. We get excited, and a tingly feeling of levitation runs up our body. We get nervous, and maybe a wave of heat rushes through our body, and our palms get sweaty. We get triggered, feel mistrust, and our voice and poster changes. There is a physiological response that happens with every experience, thought, and feeling.

Our bodies speak, and our bodies are primal. They can’t mask their feelings like our minds can.

Instead of going into why these responses are happening and into what is triggering them, we go into the feeling of them, and give them the space to lead. And when you are taught how to use your breath, touch, sound, and movement in specific ways to dance with the intelligence of these physiological responses, you might be shocked by the wisdom, guidance, and insight that comes.​

We may feel the way we do, or react the way we do, because of our past experiences, so focusing on the moment can still touch the imprints of the past, but it's centered on what is affecting us today. Somatics is focused on the sensations or patterns that are alive in the moment, because this is how our nervous system expresses itself, and this is how we redirect it, or nourish it in a way we can't through the mind.​

We are focusing on the body instead of the story because this is how we rewire our physiological responses and patterns that are running our lives.

It doesn’t matter what you think, or how you think you should feel, if your body doesn’t feel the same way.​

The story matters less than the sensation and experience that comes with it in the very moment. This doesn’t mean that in sessions there’s no attention towards our thoughts or emotions, or that sharing or speaking, or that speaking and being heard, felt, and witnessed isn’t part of it – it’s that it’s not isolated to this.

We are so used to keeping ourselves busy, our minds moving and occupied, that we’ve distanced ourselves from ourselves. We’ve lost touch with the intelligence of our bodies, and when we give them space to speak and lead, they are way more attuned to the reality we are living in than our heads.

Our heads can create all kinds of stories, but our bodies don’t lie. And coming back to our bodies, is where the answers are.

FAQ’s

Sessions are typically 50 minutes, but they are booked for 60 to allow a 10-minute buffer as needed.

These sessions are not to treat trauma; they are deeply trauma-informed and nervous system informed, but they are not for acute active trauma.

Abby is not a licensed mental health counselor, and values being very transparent about this. She is a trauma-informed somatic educator for women and has been a body worker since 2011, specializing in women’s health through abdominal massage and pelvic floor therapy. She’s facilitated women’s circles since 2015 and has held space for a thousand+ women between circles, retreats, hybrid experiences, and 1:1 sessions over the years.

Most women have experienced trauma at some point in their lives. Things may come up in sessions, but the expectation is that you have done the appropriate work beforehand, while also knowing Abby will be fully present with you and able to refer additional or other resources as needed.
